When Anxiety, Depression, and Overthinking Keep You Stuck

You replay conversations long after they happen. You worry about disappointing people, question your decisions, and wonder if you're doing enough. Other times, you may feel sad, unmotivated, or disconnected from yourself.

Part of you wants to feel calm, confident, and more like yourself again. Another part keeps worrying, shutting down, or pushing you to keep going even when you’re exhausted.

Why Anxiety and Depression Can Feel So Hard

Anxiety and depression rarely appear out of nowhere. They often develop through life experiences where you had to stay alert, take care of others, avoid mistakes, hide your feelings, or protect yourself from getting hurt.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we understand these struggles as different parts of you trying to help. You may notice a part that overthinks, a part that worries about what others think, a part that pushes you to be perfect, or a part that feels tired, sad, or not good enough.

These parts are not flaws. They developed for a reason, even if they no longer serve you in the ways they once did.

Therapy That Helps You Understand Yourself With More Compassion.

I'm Kimberly Rudy, LCSW (#70251), and I help women struggling with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, perfectionism, and emotional overwhelm. Using an IFS Therapy-informed approach, we'll work together to better understand the different parts of you that may be contributing to anxiety, sadness, self-criticism, people-pleasing, or feeling stuck.

What We Do in Therapy

Rather than judging yourself for feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed, we'll slow down and get curious about what's happening beneath the surface. Together, we'll explore the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that keep showing up and begin to understand what they may be trying to protect you from.

Using an IFS Therapy-informed approach, we'll work to better understand the different parts of you that may be carrying worry, self-doubt, sadness, hopelessness, perfectionism, or the pressure to keep going even when you're exhausted.

As therapy progresses, you will notice that anxiety feels less consuming and depression feels less heavy. You will spend less time overthinking, feel more connected to yourself, have greater compassion for yourself, and feel more confident in your ability to handle life's challenges.

The goal isn't to change who you are. It's to help you understand yourself more deeply, heal old wounds, and feel more like yourself again.

Frequently Asked Questions About IFS Informed Therapy in San Francisco

  • IFS is a type of therapy that helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself—like the part that worries, the part that criticizes, or the part that feels overwhelmed. Instead of fighting these parts, we get to know them and understand why they’re there.

  • IFS helps you see anxiety as coming from protective parts of you, rather than something that’s “wrong.” By understanding these parts and helping them feel safer, anxiety often becomes less intense and easier to manage.

  • Not necessarily. We focus on what’s coming up for you in the present moment. Sometimes that connects to past experiences, but we move at your pace and only go where it feels helpful and manageable.

  • Sessions are usually calm and conversational. We slow things down, notice what’s happening internally, and gently explore your thoughts and feelings. There’s no pressure—you don’t have to have the “right” words or figure everything out.

  • FS can be helpful if you feel stuck in overthinking, self-doubt, or emotional overwhelm, and want a more compassionate way of working with yourself. It’s especially useful if being hard on yourself hasn’t actually helped you feel better.

  • Many women who struggle with anxiety appear capable, responsible, and successful on the outside. You may be someone others rely on, someone who gets things done and handles a lot of responsibility. At the same time, inside you may feel constant pressure, self-doubt, or worry about making mistakes.

This type of high-functioning anxiety is very common. Therapy can help you slow the constant mental pressure, develop healthier ways to manage expectations, and reconnect with a greater sense of calm and self-trust.

  • Item descIt depends on what you’re wanting support with. Some shifts happen gradually, and deeper patterns usually take time to work through. We’ll move at a pace that feels right for you, with the goal of helping you create meaningful, lasting change.ription
